Victorian MP Michael Galea Visits Ukraine to Witness the Realities of War and Ongoing Recovery
Michael Galea MP, a committed supporter of Ukraine, has become the first State-level Australian politician to visit Ukraine since russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022.
During his visit, Mr Galea met with various civil society representatives, including the Ukrainian Child Rights Network, Superhumans Center, Ukrainian medic & founder of “Taira’s Angels” Yuliia ‘Taira’ Paievska, and journalist Julian Knysh, a representative of the Ukrainian diaspora in Australia. His agenda was jam-packed, focused on the devastating effects of the war on children, rehabilitation & reconstruction efforts, and the importance of international advocacy and collaborative support initiatives.
The trip took Galea to Irpin, where he witnessed firsthand the remarkable resilience of Ukrainians and their efforts to rebuild amidst ongoing conflict. Galea traveled across the globe to gain a deeper understanding of Ukraine’s situation and has since returned with the intention of raising awareness among his fellow parliamentarians in Victoria.
Upon his return, Mr Galea addressed the Victorian Parliament. He acknowledged the personal consequences of his stance, which led him to being put on russia’s banned list: “Being sanctioned by russia is something I take pride in. It strengthens my commitment to standing with Ukraine during this incredibly difficult time. The strength and spirit of ordinary Ukrainians serve as a powerful reminder of what’s at stake. Their struggle is one shared by all democratic nations. Slava Ukraini.”
Special thanks go to Julian Knysh, Ashley Awramenko, Teresa Lachowicz, Eugene Hawryszko, AFUO Board Member Chrestyna Kmetj, the Association of Ukrainians in Victoria, and the Victorian Government and Parliament for their unwavering support of Ukraine!
