The Declaration of Unity was signed in 1919 at a jubilant and triumphal public celebration held in St. Sophia Square in Kyiv:
The territory of Ukraine, divided over the centuries into the West Ukrainian People’s Republic (Galicia, Bukovyna, Hungarian Ukraine) and Dnipro Ukraine, will now become united.
Dreams, which the best sons of Ukraine fought and died for over centuries, have come true.
From now on there is one united and independent Ukrainian People’s Republic.
The unification of Ukraine did not last. By early 1921, Ukrainians lost their independence, and suffered through 70 years of Soviet russian occupation, terror and famine.
But the dream of unity, independence and statehood lived on. In 1990, on 22 January, between 500,000 – 3 million Ukrainians created a human chain from Kyiv to Lviv.
In 2023, as we approach a year of resisting the full-scale russian invasion of Ukraine, our commitment to unity, independence and freedom are undiminished.
