UNESCO officially recognises the Ukrainian kobza and wheel lyre tradition and the pysanka (traditional wax-painted Ukrainian Easter egg) as part of the world’s cultural heritage!
🐣 Pysanky – the intricate art of decorating eggs has been cherished in Ukraine for centuries. Using wax and dye, each egg becomes a canvas for patterns and symbols that carry personal wishes, meaningful symbolism and protection. Rooted in ancient traditions, making pysanky has become a beloved Easter ritual – a beautiful way for Ukrainians to preserve their identity and connect across generations.
🎶 Kobza & wheel lyre tradition – a nomadic music tradition involving visually impaired musicians who sing and play string instruments such as the kobza.
This adds to existing Ukrainian items which have been included in UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage lists, including the culture of Ukrainian borsch cooking, Kosiv painted ceramics, Cossack songs, Petrikivka decorative painting, and knowledge about Örnek, Crimean Tatar symbolic motifs and designs.
