October 1 marks Ukraine’s Defenders Day
This national holiday honours all who have defended, and continue to defend, Ukraine. It is a day of gratitude and remembrance – paying tribute to fallen soldiers, active service members, veterans, officers, and combat medics.

Today also coincides with the Feast of the Intercession of the Holy Mother of God – a day associated with protection from enemies. Centuries ago, the Virgin Mary was the patron saint of the Ukrainian Cossacks, and this holy day was held in high regard. Today the Virgin Mary is hailed as the patron saint of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
