Two priceless ancient artefacts officially returned to Ukraine by Arts Minister Tony Burke amidst Independence Day celebrations.
A pendant from the ancient Yamnaya culture (3rd millennium BCE) and an iron arrowhead from the 12th–13th century were illegally trafficked to Australia late 2023. Thanks to the cooperation of Australian and Ukrainian customs, and the Office for the Arts, they were intercepted and protected upon arriving in Sydney.
Arts Minister Tony Burke MP officially handed the items back to Ukrainian Ambassador Vasyl Myroshnychenko during the Ukrainian Council of NSW – ОУГ НПВ Independence Day concert over the weekend, reiterating Australia’s stance against the illicit trade of cultural heritage – especially in times of war.
“These objects are part of the history and heritage of the people of Ukraine, which must be preserved for future generations,” Minister Burke added.
These artefacts are not just objects – they are pieces of Ukraine’s rich and ancient history, spirit, and resilience.
