“The comments from President Trump overnight are shocking and appalling. President Trump has blamed Ukraine for ‘starting the war’ and is willfully ignoring that it is completely impossible to hold a presidential election as the country continues to actively hold back an aggressive, prolonged invasion,” said Kateryna Argyrou, co-chair of the Australian Federation of Ukrainian Organisations (AFUO).

“Do not forget: Russia is the aggressor and Putin started this war by launching a full-scale invasion in February 2022. Ukraine is a strong democracy, but as the victim of Russia’s war, elections are not a priority.
“President Trump appears to be captured by Russian propaganda, which is a very dangerous situation for Ukraine. His comments are so utterly divorced from reality and are a huge concern. Ukraine is entitled to its sovereignty and independence, and needs its rightful seat at the negotiating table.
“In these strained and volatile times, we call on the Australian Government to stand up for the rules-based order, to stand up for Ukraine, and to ensure that Ukraine receives meaningful security guarantees which will be essential to securing durable peace.
“The Australian Government needs to add its voice in support of Ukraine. Australia has been a strong ally and friend to Ukraine, and for that we will be forever grateful. Australia has an important role to play. This is not the time to stay silent. We need leadership from the Albanese Government,” said Ms. Argyrou.
