Sunday’s Ukrainian community protest at Kurnell – held at the Ampol wharf beside the Navig8Gladiator tanker carrying refined fuel made with Russian crude oil – caught national attention, with coverage on prime-time, evening 9 News:
Resources Minister the Hon Madeleine King MP was quoted in the 9 News story: “It is a loophole to look at, absolutely… We will do our best to make sure those sanctions are adhered to and that we don’t fund any war effort of russia.”
AFUO leadership recently met with Minister King’s office in Canberra, advocating for the Government to close the sanctions loophole which has led to Australia becoming the single biggest importer of laundered russian crude.
The Government’s acknowledgment of the loophole which allows russian-linked fuel to enter Australia is important. Indirectly financing russia’s war economy undermines Australia’s values and the very sanctions designed to cut funds to the Kremlin.
Thank you to every protester, organiser, and supporter who has stood with us. Together, we’ve turned public outrage into public action.
Let’s keep up the momentum!
