We are deeply distressed by the relentless suffering being inflicted on the people of Kyiv and cities across Ukraine in the last few weeks.
On Thursday 20 August, at least 18 people were killed as russia struck the capital twice in a single day, exploiting Ukraine’s dwindling stock of missile interceptors.
Over the last few weeks, russian missiles and drones have destroyed a beloved book market, warehouses and residential buildings. The UN’s own monitors say July was the deadliest month for Ukrainian civilians since April 2022.
These are not isolated tragedies — they are a pattern, and Ukrainian families and children are paying the price.
The AFUO urges the Anthony Albanese Government not to look away. Ukraine needs:
- Stronger Air Defence Support – we urge the Government to help ensure Ukraine has the interceptors and air defence systems it needs so families are not left unprotected night after night.
- Tighter Sanctions on russia – Close the Blood Oil Loophole – Australia bans direct russian oil imports, but fuel refined from russian crude in India and Brunei still gets in – and that revenue helps fund the drones and missiles hitting Kyiv and other cities.
Add your voice by writing today to your local MP:

- Email your local Member of Parliament to urge them to close the sanctions loophole: https://standwithukraine.good.do/aus-stop-fueling-russias-war/message-local-mps/
Ukraine’s people deserve more than sympathy. They deserve sustained, visible action.
