The Torm Emilie tanker is scheduled to sail into Perth in a few days’ time, loaded with diesel refined from russian crude at India’s Mangalore refinery.
India’s imports of russian crude have surged from 1% to 40% since the start of the full-scale invasion – crude which is processed into petroleum products which continue to flow into Australia through a sanctions loophole.
This loophole is lethal. The oil tax revenue Australia sends to the Kremlin feeds the russian war machine, props up its economy, undermines global sanctions, and prolongs the suffering and destruction in Ukraine.
In Senate Estimates last week, both Senator Michaelia Cash, Shadow Foreign Affairs Minister, and Senator Fatima Payman grilled the Government on why this trade was allowed.
WA Premier Roger Cook said last Wednesday that “we must not support autocratic regimes.”
The Australian Financial Review quoted the Ukrainian Ambassador Vasyl Myroshnychenko and AFUO Chair Kateryna Argyrou in an article yesterday urging an end to blood oil flowing into Australia.
It’s time the issue was addressed, and the backdoor was shut down.
We call on:
- The Australian Government to ban the import of fuel refined from russian crude
- Fuel retailers to align their sourcing practices with Australian sanctions and ethical standards
