Overnight, a massive russian missile and drone attack on Kyiv has set the roof of the Dormition Cathedral – the main church of the ancient Kyiv Pechersk Lavra monastery complex – on fire.
Founded in the mid 11th century, the cathedral and monastery complex is one of the most important and sacred Orthodox Christian sites in the world, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site – belonging not just to Ukraine but to all of humanity.
A place of stillness, worship, prayer, holy shrines, caves and relics, where priests chant prayers and ancient bells toll – today a scene of destruction and a terrible crime.
His Beatitude Metropolitan Epiphanius of Kyiv and All Ukraine has asked for “prayers for the salvation of the shrine from destruction. Another russian crime against humanity, against history, against Christianity”.
The attack also killed four people and injured at least 30 others across Kyiv. In Kharkiv, russian drone strikes set the Kharkiv Art Museum ablaze yesterday and, in a double tap strike, killed five rescuers.
The Australian Federation of Ukrainian Organisations calls on the Anthony Albanese Government and the international community to condemn these unconscionable attacks on Ukraine’s sacred and cultural heritage and its people, and to accelerate all support for Ukraine’s defence and survival.
