The Ukrainian Film Festival in Sydney will burst onto the screen between Friday 26 – Sunday 28 May at Dendy Cinema Newtown with a moving and thought-provoking range of Ukrainian internationally recognised dramas, documentaries, and tragicomedies. 
Supported by the Ukrainian Council of NSW (UCNSW) and the Australian Federation of Ukrainian Organisations (AFUO), the UA Film Festival is the brainchild of Kateryna Kyrychenko, a documentary filmmaker and author from the Donbas, who fled Russia’s invasion of Ukraine with her young son.
“I want to share with Australians – who have been so warm and welcoming – my country’s culture. There is so much more to Ukraine than war,” said Kateryna.
“Festival films were chosen because they represent the best of Ukrainian cinema – featured in festivals around the world, and each an internationally recognized masterpiece.
“Today, as a result of Russia’s invasion, my colleagues, directors, videographers and actors are dying every day, defending the right to simply be free, so that their children can live in a free country.
“Millions of people died during the First World War. World War II lost tens of millions of people. There will be no Third World War. This is not a trilogy.
“Ukraine will stop Russian aggression on our land. I am sure that this victory is very close because we are all united. Our goal is to bring peace through goodness, honesty and light – it is.time to fight against darkness, cruelty and lies, to make sure that each life matters.
Some of the films on display at the Festival are the thought provoking documentary “Mariupol. Unlost Hope“, the poignant movie “Carols of the Bells“, and the tragicomedie “I work at the Cemetery“, “The Guide” and “Ballroom King”
