To the joy of Ukrainians worldwide, the Ukrainian women’s sabre team has won Ukraine’s first Olympic gold medal for 2024!
This follows a silver in shooting for Serhiy Kulish and a bronze in the women’s individual sabre medal for Olya Kharlan, the most decorated Olympian in Ukraine’s history (with five medals).
Kharlan was disqualified from last year’s world championships — a key Olympic qualifier — for refusing to shake the hand of a russian opponent after winning their bout. But her moral conviction reminded the world of the unjust practice of allowing russian athletes to compete at the 2024 Olympics whilst waging an illegal and genocidal war against Ukraine.
Upon winning her bronze medal at the Paris Games, Kharlan said “I dedicate this medal to the whole of Ukraine… I dedicate it to our defenders, to those athletes who could not come here because they were killed by russia. I am Ukrainian. We have strength. We will always fight.”
Bravo Olya! Congratulations to all our Olympic champions and medalists!
