Thank you Australia for joining 31 countries in delivering interventions before the International Court of Justice – the UN’s highest court – in support of Ukraine’s case against Russia.
The intervention “demonstrates Australia’s unwavering commitment to upholding fundamental rules of international law and the integrity of the Genocide Convention,” said the Attorney General, Mark Dreyfus.
We also strongly endorse comments made by the Foreign Affairs Minister Senator Penny Wong yesterday that broader discussion is required about reforming the UN Security Council as Russia continues to use its veto power to prevent action against it.
“The fact is that we didn’t contemplate, humanity didn’t contemplate, that a member of the P-5 permanent members of the Security Council … would use that veto to protect their own breach of the UN charter,” she said.
Thank you Australia for supporting the international community to hold Russia to account💪
