On 28 July we honour the courage and sacrifice of Ukrainian defenders and civilians who endured unimaginable suffering, and those who lost their lives, whilst held in russian captivity.
Among the most heinous acts was the killing of more than 50 Ukrainian POWs in Olenivka, a russian-occupied prison near Donetsk, on this day three years ago.

Most were defenders of Azovstal – Ukrainian soldiers who had held out for 86 days in Mariupol’s besieged steel plant, protecting civilians under relentless fire. After running out of supplies, they surrendered under the promise of humane treatment.
Instead, on July 29, the barracks where they were held was destroyed by russia. Over 50 were killed and nearly 150 were wounded.
Ukraine condemned russia for orchestrating the deliberate destruction of the site – an account backed by satellite imagery and intercepted communications.
Despite repeated promises, russia never allowed international observers into the facility. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and UN were denied access. Families were left without answers.
The UN later disbanded its fact-finding mission, unable to investigate the site. Efforts for an international investigation remain ongoing.Three years on, there is still no justice.
We urge the international community to continue its unwavering pursuit of justice and accountability for those brutally killed at Olenivka, and for all who remain detained in russian captivity.
