On 23 November, Ukrainians around the world will commemorate the 91st anniversary of the Ukrainian Famine – the 1932-33 Holodomor (death by hunger).
The Holodomor was a man-made famine in Ukraine, orchestrated by the Soviet dictator Stalin and the Government of the USSR, which sought to break resistance to Soviet rule and eliminate the Ukrainian people as a national group.
Through the forced confiscation of grain and food, bans on travel outside the village or borders of Soviet Ukraine, and repression of dissenters, the famine created conditions which were incompatible with life.
The people of Ukraine – a country which incorporates 30% of the world’s most fertile black soils – became the victims of a terrible, inhuman crime. Between 4 – 7 million Ukrainians died a slow, agonising death from starvation.
This week, we also marked the 1000th day of Russia’s full-scale genocidal war against Ukraine. These significant historical events are intertwined, reflecting the brutality and ruthlessness of the aggressor who is determined to eradicate the Ukrainian people.
The AFUO thanks our state hromady, churches, and community organisers for the vigils, prayers and commemorations held this week to pay respect to the victims of the Holodomor and those within our community who carry the memories of this terror.
