The Australian Federation of Ukrainian Organisations welcomes Ukraine’s commitment to the peace process and proposal for a 30-day ceasefire.
Ukrainians have always wanted peace. From the start of russia’s full-scale invasion, Ukraine’s sole aim has been defending its people, culture and homeland.

The proposed 30-day ceasefire is the first step towards a just and lasting peace that ensures Ukraine’s security and holds russia accountable. It is critical that there is silence in the sky and seas, Ukrainian prisoners are released, and children are returned.
However, Ukraine and its allies must remain on high alert — russia has a shameful history of using negotiations and ceasefires as smokescreens to rearm, regroup, and resume its war of aggression. The ramp up of russian missile and drone attacks on Ukrainian cities in recent weeks has hardly been the sign of a county looking to de-escalate.
We continue to advocate for increased military, economic and humanitarian support from Australia and Ukraine’s allies to ensure Ukraine is able to defend itself and guarantee global security.
Vladimir Putin has always had the power to end this war. His refusal to do so speaks volumes. We hope this ceasefire marks the beginning of the end of russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
