A Hero’s Journey to Recovery: Ukrainian veteran in Australia for medical treatment that could see him walk again!
On one of Ukraine’s newest public holidays – Defenders Day, held on 1 October – the AFUO and all Australian-Ukrainians welcome Viktor, a brave defender who has arrived straight from the frontline in Ukraine to Australia for medical treatment.
Viktor is 29 years old (call-sign “Blacksmith – Kузнец”) and recently lost both legs as a result of heavy russian artillery fire in Chasiv Yar. Despite drastic injury, he epitomises the Ukrainian spirit – undefeated. Viktor is determined to walk again and to return to his fellow defenders on the frontline.
Atlas Global Aid have raised funds to bring Viktor to Australia for osseointegration, a procedure which will attach prosthetic legs directly to his bones. For more information, click here.
Greeted with bread and salt upon arriving in Australia yesterday, Viktor struck all with his humility, good humour and graciousness. ‘Speaking with Viktor was inspirational. Even a brief conversation showed his bravery, positivity and love for Ukraine,’ said one of those present.
Thank you Viktor for your selfless heroism. We thank you for your service in protecting Ukraine and the global, rules based order. We pray your operation is a success and you have the chance to walk again in your beloved Ukraine
