On 26 April 1986, the explosion at the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant became the worst disaster in the history of nuclear power generation.

As the Kremlin attempted to cover up the catastrophe, millions were left exposed to nuclear radiation. It was a failure that cost lives, pushed Europe to the verge of disaster, and exposed the true nature of the Soviet regime.
Today, on this day of mourning, that lesson is being ignored.
russia’s occupation and militarisation of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant has turned it into a military base. Safety systems have been disabled, external power is regularly cut, and mines have been planted along the perimeter.
In February 2025, a russian drone damaged the shelter over Chornobyl.
These are deliberate threats — not just to Ukraine, but to global safety.
The Australian Federation of Ukrainian Organisations stands with the Ukrainian World Congress – Свiтовий Конґрес Українців in calling for urgent action:
The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant must be demilitarised
russia’s actions – using nuclear facilities as instruments of coercion and global terror — must be recognised and condemned; nuclear safety must never be weaponised

Ukraine must be supported to defend its people and infrastructure
Chornobyl showed the cost of silence. The world cannot afford to ignore this warning again.
