On this special milestone, we honour the journey of the Ukrainian Women’s Association Australia (UWAA), founded on 13 September 1949 in Cowra. The UWAA emerged from the Cowra Migrant Holding Centre in NSW, where Ukrainian women came together to support each other and preserve their rich culture.
Joining the World Federation of Ukrainian Women’s Organisations in 1951, the UWAA earned a voice on the global stage, representing Ukrainian women at the United Nations. For 75 years, UWAA has been a cornerstone of strength, advocating for Ukrainian language, culture, and heritage, both in the Australian diaspora and in Ukraine.
The UWAA celebrated its special milestone on Saturday 21 September 2024 at Europa Park, Cowra. Europa Park is situated on the site of the former Cowra Migrant Holding Centre. The UWAA planted a Kalyna, a Guelder Rose, and celebrated over lunch at Cowra Services Club.
The event was attended by the Ambassador of Ukraine, Vasyl Myroshnychenko, and his wife Liana, the Hon Stephen Lawrence MLC representing Hon Stephen Kamper MP, NSW Minister for Multiculturalism, and several Councillors from Cowra Council, as well as 140 members and friends.
Thank you UWAA for your enormous work over 75 years to preserve and maintain Ukrainian culture, strengthen the Ukrainian community, and support those who needed help, both here and in Ukraine. We honour your legacy, and all those who have contributed to this proud history. Together, we stand united!
