On Sunday night, 10 News+ broadcast a powerful story about russian blood oil — and the uncomfortable truth that Australia is part of the problem.
AFUO Chair, Kateryna Argyrou, spoke for our community:
“The reality is Australia is funnelling significant cash to the Kremlin. It’s a betrayal of Australian values. Australians stand for what is fair and what is right — and this is not right.”
The numbers are damning. According to the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air, Australian imports from refineries processing russian crude have increased by 46% this year — largely driven by the Iran-US conflict, deepening a dangerous loophole.
It’s estimated that to date at least $2.5 billion in tax revenue has been generated for the Kremlin. That’s more than the $1.7 billion Australia has provided to Ukraine in aid.
Every time Australia fills up with this fuel, money flows to the russian war machine. Money that funds the killing of Ukrainians.
We are urging the Albanese Government to close the sanctions loophole which allows this to happen
