Have you visited Australia’s newest Ukrainian restaurant “Otakoi” in the heart of Melbourne?
34 Chapel Street, Melbourne
Founded by Hanna, a Ukrainian displaced person who arrived in 2022 with her 16 year old son, and Michael, a local chef with 30+ years in the industry – it’s a story of resilience, hope and starting over.
Displaced by russia’s full-scale invasion, and unsure of what the future held for herself and her son, Hanna brought with her a lifelong dream of opening a restaurant. Together, Hanna, Micheal and their team have opened Otakoi (meaning “Wow factor” or “how about that!”) – a space full of heart, heritage and unbeatable home-cooked Ukrainian flavours.
“Our recipes are authentic,” says Michael. “Passed down from babtsyas to daughters – and now to me!”
“Australia helps me to feel at home, and now we brought a piece of home for all Ukrainians here,” says Hannah.
Otakoi was blessed by both Ukrainian Orthodox and Ukrainian Catholic priests, and warmly welcomed by the local community. Its grand opening on 25 July left such an impression, they are already fully booked for August!
