Ukrainian dancers from around the country have taken part in an intensive workshop this week in Adelaide led by renowned artists from the Pavlo Virsky Ukrainian National Folk Dance Ensemble – Maksym Karpenko, Viktoriia Karpenko and Tetiana Okseniuk.
A once in a lifetime opportunity for dance groups from our diaspora to learn from the very best and bring back techniques, moves and breathe new life into our dance and culture.
Speaking with ABC, Maksym Karpenko said they often awake to loud explosions back home in Kyiv — and that everyone had been personally affected by the war, including the untimely death of a former dance ensemble member, just three days after leaving for the frontline.
“If we go over the border, we have to talk about this,” he said. “Our nation will never die. It will always be alive.”
Ms Okseniuk said Ukrainians were focusing on the positives and that they are still here. “We came here to show how beautiful Ukrainian culture is and that it’s worth attention,” she said.
