The Australian Federation of Ukrainian Organisations (AFUO) and the Association of Ukrainians in Victoria (AUV) will tonight honour 48 Australians who have gone above and beyond to help displaced Ukrainians in Victoria by awarding them AFUO-AUV Good Samaritan plaques.
“We want to acknowledge these compassionate Aussies. They have donated money, food, clothes, goods and services to newly arrived, traumatised Ukrainian families,” said Eugene Hawryszko, Vice President of AUV.
“Every small piece of assistance has been incredibly useful and warmed the hearts of displaced Ukrainian men, women and children,” he added.
Stefan Romaniw, AFUO Co-chair said “We think it is important to recognise those Australians who have given a lot and continue to do more to support Ukraine and Ukrainians. Through opening their homes and hearts, and providing the necessities required to settle in unknown territory, they have exemplified the Aussie spirit of decency and a fair go.”
“These Australians didn’t ask what was required – they just used their initiative and provided support,” he added.
Recipients of the Good Samaritan plaques will be honoured at a cocktail party being held at the Ukrainian House in Essendon, Victoria at 6.00pm tonight.
Victoria’s Governor, Her Excellency Linda Dessau, is among the recipients of a Good Samaritan plaque, for offering a weekly program at Government House for displaced Ukrainian women.
Guests will be greeted by colourful Ukrainian dancers, who will present them with the traditional Ukrainian bread and salt greeting.
The Ukrainian House in Essendon has been the centre of the Ukrainian community in Melbourne for many decades. The surrounding area has also formed part of a Ukrainian Arts Precinct featuring Ukrainian-themed murals dedicated to the plight of Ukraine. Each artwork includes a QR code linking to the AFUO’s humanitarian aid charity Ukraine Crisis Appeal.
