Thousands of Australian homes may be built with russian blood timber – unknowingly funding russia’s war against Ukraine
Monday’s The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age front-page report by Matthew Knott reveals that significant amounts of russian timber are entering Australia after being laundered through third countries – evading tariffs by exploiting the same loophole as russian blood oil, whereby russian products ‘processed’ in third countries arrive here as ‘non-russian’.
The Australian forestry industry has raised the alarm in the russia sanctions inquiry, urging the government to ban all russian-sourced timber products.

AFUO Chair Kateryna Argyrou voiced our community’s concerns in the article:
“The Australian government is allowing russian blood money to fund the murder of Ukrainian civilians, and it must stop now. Whether it is russian timber laundered through Chinese factories or russian crude oil refined in India and Brunei… we are calling on the Albanese government to close these sanctions loopholes immediately.”
Australia should not be providing a financial pipeline to the russian war machine. It’s time the Anthony Albanese Government acted to ensure its russia sanctions regime is effective and that loopholes are closed immediately. The lives of thousands of people are at stake!
