Today, the Australian Federation of Ukrainian Organisations and community members across Australia stand once again with the Ukrainian World Congress – Свiтовий Конґрес Українців and Ukrainians across the globe for #russianShameDay.
On May 9, russia weaponises the memory of WW2 — glorifying only its own role, promoting militarism, and using the occasion to justify its genocidal war of aggression against Ukraine and its assault on the world’s democracies.
This year, for the first time in over two decades, the parade will feature NO military hardware. The self-proclaimed “military superpower” dared not roll its weapons through its own capital for fear of Ukrainian drones.
The real story of May 9 is what russia is doing in Ukraine: war crimes, the horrors of Bucha, Izyum, Yahidne and Mariupol, and the destruction of many more villages and towns. In occupied territories — abuse of civilians, theft and destruction of property, churches, cultural heritage, and mass deportations of children.
These are not the acts of a “liberator.” They are the hallmarks of modern imperialism and the very fascism russia claims to oppose.
May 9 is not a day of glory. It is #russianShameDay.
We urge the Australian Government to:
Deepen sanctions on russia, including closing the ‘blood oil’ sanctions loophole
Support international measures to ensure full accountability for russia’s war crimes
Transfer frozen russian assets into an international trust fund for Ukraine’s recovery
Increase military and humanitarian support for Ukraine
