The Australian Federation of Ukrainian Organisations (AFUO) has formally written to Wesfarmers and Woolworths, the owners of major retailers, including Officeworks, Kmart Australia, and BIG W over world maps that incorrectly label Crimea as a “disputed region.”
Big W and K Mart have since withdrawn the maps from sale.
Officeworks has not.
Crimea is internationally recognised as Ukrainian territory, currently under illegal russian occupation. It is not “disputed”.
This is the position of the Australia government and its democratic allies.
Selling these maps misleads Australian children and families about internationally recognised borders.
For the Ukrainian-Australian community – especially those who have fled the invasion or lost loved ones defending Ukraine’s sovereignty – seeing Crimea depicted inaccurately in classrooms and homes is deeply distressing and profoundly disrespectful.
AFUO has called on Officeworks to:
Immediately remove the maps from sale
Review supplier standards
Ensure geographical accuracy
Crimea is Ukraine. Education should reflect the truth – not russian propaganda.
