The Australian Federation of Ukrainian Organisation (AFUO) Chair Kateryna joined 2CC Canberra to raise awareness of Ukraine’s deepening energy crisis, as russia continues relentless attacks on the country’s energy infrastructure.
Speaking after a recent visit to Ukraine, Kateryna shared the personal toll of the war on her family. Her mother was injured and her apartment damaged after a neighbouring building was hit by a russian missile – a reality that weighs heavily on many in the Australian-Ukrainian community as they fear for loved ones back home.
“Because of russia’s intensified attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure – which are deliberately designed to inflict maximum human suffering – we have seen entire cities plunged into darkness,” Ms Argyrou said.

Despite exhaustion, Ukrainians are trying to live normal lives in survival mode. Neighbours gather, light bonfires, cook together, and support each other.
With much of Ukraine now relying on generators, the AFUO’s Future Ukraine tax-deductible charity has launched “Warmth for Ukraine” to provide lifesaving energy aid.
