For the first time in history, Australia is hosting the Permanent Synod of the Ukrainian Catholic Church in Australia, New Zealand and Oceania – a milestone moment for our community.
From 4–14 December 2025, His Beatitude Sviatoslav and bishops from across the world will meet in Melbourne for the 13th (84th) session of the Permanent Synod for a series of working days, intensive joint prayers and meetings with the local Ukrainian-Australian community.
The Ukrainian bishops will also conduct a series of meetings with Catholic clergy in Australia and government leaders, including the Deputy Prime Minister of Australia Richard Marles MP, the Minister for Trade and Tourism Don Farrell and the Premier of Victoria Jacinta Allan.
The AFUO warmly welcomes the Synod’s presence on our shores and its engagement with Government, church leaders, and Ukrainians across Australia.
Their visit brings profound spiritual significance, crucial discussions on Ukraine’s future, and a powerful show of global unity with our people.
“This event is a chance to showcase the life of our Australian-Ukrainian community in the context of the global Church, to demonstrate our faithfulness and unity, and to receive spiritual encouragement and inspiration through the example of our bishops,” said Cardinal Mykola Bychok.
On 7 December, the Patriarch and bishops will preside over the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy at Ukrainian Cathedral – Sts Peter & Paul in Melbourne.
Divine Liturgies will be held on Tuesday 9 December at Ukrainain Catholic Church of St. Volodymyr Canberra and Wednesday 10 December at the Melbourne Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral. On Sunday 14 December, clergy will pray with the bishops in their own parish communities in Ardeer, Geelong, Sydney, Brisbane and Perth.
Together, we honour our faith, strengthen our unity, and amplify Ukraine’s voice in this critical time.
