“Our latest trip to Ukraine last month was again very successful – with another 20 Vscan Air portable ultrasounds delivered thanks to donations to the Ukraine Crisis Appeal and hands on Masterclass with the end users conducted by Dr Andrew Dobrotwir, Specialist Radiologist and Teresa Lachowicz, Ukraine Aid Coordinator.
This training is vital, to ensure that the devices are being used to their full, life saving potential.
We also managed to deliver two V.A.C. Ulta units to surgeons in Lviv, funded by Ukraine Crisis Appeal. With the ongoing intensity of conflict and the alarming increase in complex traumatic injuries – including blast wounds, burns, and infected soft-tissue injuries – there is an urgent need to strengthen the wound care capacity in Ukrainian hospitals.
A stop in Pidvolochsyk to deliver a missing foot pedal from the C-Arm UCA had previously funded and to catch up with the doctors and administrators who we now call friends, then Volochysk to deliver a Vscan Air and we were in Kyiv.
Despite a ferocious attack on the city during the night before our training session, we enjoyed a good few days in the beautiful capital. The gratitude of doctors and medics who come to our training sessions is hard to explain – the fact that Australian Ukrainians are standing with them and are unafraid to come in person to provide training is very special to them (and to us).
We also visited the Okhmadyt Children’s Hospital, which was damaged by a russian missile attack in 2024 and toured the facility with some wonderful young doctors.
The resilience of the Ukrainian people is breathtaking and inspirational.
