Thank you Andrew Wilkie, MP
Yesterday, during the first question time of the 48th parliament, Federal MP Andrew Wilkie MP – Independent Member for Clark asked the Deputy Prime Minister, Richard Marles, about the critical issue of russian origin fuel products being imported into Australia.
While the Deputy PM Prime reflected on Australia’s valuable support, it was disappointing that he did not address the substance of Mr Wilkie’s question – namely, how the sale of refined russian oil in Australia continues to help fund the Kremlin’s war machine and sustain its brutal war against Ukraine.
Mr Wilkie highlighted recent tankers docking in Botany Bay, carrying refined russian crude.
“These vessels carried 90,000 tonnes of russian-source petrol, paid for by Australians, which will help fund Putin’s war in Ukraine,” he said.
“Why are the loopholes in our sanctions so big you can drive a tanker through them?” Mr Wilkie asked.
Yesterday, the AFUO wrote to all Federal Members and Senators, urging them to support closing this unacceptable sanctions loophole.
Next week, the AFUO will be in Parliament House to advocate directly for action to stop the flow of Russian-origin fuel into Australia.
