The International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) on 12 May voted and confirmed russia failed to uphold its legal obligations under international law for the downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 on 17 July 2014, that killed all 298 people onboard, including 38 Australians.

In November 2022 a Dutch court found three men responsible for the crime and tried them in absentia as russia refused to hand them over.
“This is a historic moment in the pursuit of truth, justice and accountability for the victims of the downing of Flight MH17, and their families and loved ones,” said Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong.
“We call upon russia to finally face up to its responsibility for this horrific act of violence and make reparations for its egregious conduct, as required under international law. Our thoughts remain with those who lost their lives as a result of russia’s actions, their families and loved ones,” she concluded.
Australia stands with Ukraine and the international community in shining a light on the truth and upholding international law by holding those responsible to account.
