The Australian Federation of Ukrainian Organisations (AFUO) stands with the global Ukrainian community in declaring May 9 as Russian Shame Day — a day to reject the Kremlin’s manipulation of history and expose the ongoing atrocities being committed by Russia in its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

In an initiative led by the Ukrainian World Congress (UWC), the AFUO is calling on Australians to remember the atrocities committed in the invasion of Ukraine, and see Victory Day as it really is – a day of shame for Russia.
Kateryna Argyrou, Chair of the AFUO, said the Russian Federation continues to rewrite history for its own gain, covering up its own war crimes on a global stage.
“This year marks the 80th anniversary of Victory Day in Europe, a solemn celebration that has been co-opted by the Russian Federation to distort the truth and loudly promote nationalism, brutality and aggression,” she said.
“Russia continues its brutal, illegal invasion of Ukraine, killing men, women and children on a daily basis. The world cannot celebrate victory against dictators while ignoring the reality of Ukrainians.”
“Russian disinformation and misinformation are significant problems here in Australia, and we cannot allow authoritarian regimes to share their propaganda unchallenged,” she said.
“We urge all Australians to declare May 9 as Russian Shame Day, and stand with Ukraine for truth, justice and peace.”
