Third year commemoration generated a strong response from Australian political leaders and media

March 2, 2025 by CYOA Administrator

Our Australian-Ukrainian community’s third year commemoration of russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine generated a strong response and engagement from the Australian Government, political leaders and the media around the country.

  • The PM Anthony Albanese, Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong – Senator for SA, Coalition Leader Peter Dutton, Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs David Coleman – Member for Banks and Shadow Minister for Defence Andrew Hastie released powerful statements of support for Ukraine
  • The Australian Government announced 149 additional sanctions against russian individuals and entities
  • More than 60 state and federal political leaders and the Governor-General of Australia Sam Mostyn attended state hromada events around the country
  • Senator Catryna Bilyk and Senator Linda Reynolds, Co-chairs of the Australia-Ukraine Parliamentary Friendship Group (AUPFG), and AUPFG member and Member for Adelaide, Mr Steve Georganas MP, moved motions in the Senate and House of Reps respectively
  • The AFUO sent 262 letters to all federal members of parliament
  • H.E. Vasyl Myroshnychenko, Ukrainian Ambassador, and Kateryna Argyrou, AFUO Co-Chair, held a well-attended media conference at Parliament House, Canberra
  • Ambassadors and Honorary Consuls from European countries, the United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand and elsewhere attended events round the country
  • Representatives from the Baltic, Polish, Vietnamese, Jewish and Hong Kong communities stood with us in solidarity
  • National coverage included pieces from 7 News, 9 News, SBS News, ABC News, WIN Canberra, 2CC Radio Canberra, 2GB Sydney, and a front-page story in the Sydney Morning Herald (initiated by the AFUO) about our brave, young Ukrainian defender, Nazar “Kapa” (also published in The Age)

We thank our Hromada organisations for their vital role in advocating for Ukraine, building relationships with our political leaders and key stakeholders, and engaging with the media.

We thank Australia for its support and now, more than ever, ask Australia to continue to #StandWithUkraine and demand a just, comprehensive and fair peace for Ukraine.
