Emeritus Professor of Ukrainian Studies, Marko Pavlyshyn, and exhibition’s co-curator, Deanna Ramsey, will explore the rich topic of contemporary Ukrainian literature – a key feature of Hoping Against Hope – and discuss broader themes such as poetic expression and resistance, collective identity, cultural memory, countering colonial legacies, language and translation.
The event will also feature a special performance of the project “Berehynia” by Eva Heiky Olga Abbinga – a powerful exploration of feminine strength, cultural heritage, and protective symbolism, inspired by the Ukrainian goddess of the home. Featuring performers from Lehenda Ukrainian Dance Company, “Berehnyia” questions the role of cultural identity, tradition, and the collective spirit in the face of adversity, particularly within the context of war and diaspora.
Afterwards guests are invited to explore the exhibition at their own pace, with the curator on hand to answer any questions. Light refreshments will be served.
