Join your local community to celebrate Ukrainian Day of Unity on 22 January, when Ukrainians around the world will celebrate the day on which Ukraine declared itself a free and united sovereign state in 1919.
On January 22, 1919, on St. Sophia Square in Kyiv, the ‘Act of Unification’ of the Ukrainian People’s Republic and the Western Ukrainian People’s Republic into a single independent state was proclaimed. This realised the long-held desire for unity among Ukrainians, previously divided by different empires.
Ukrainians celebrate this day as a pivotal milestone in Ukrainian statehood, and an important symbol of our united strength and cohesion. Traditionally, the day is marked by creating a human “chain of unity”.
Today, in the face of russian invasion and aggression, Ukrainian Day of Unity is more important than ever to remind Ukrainians and the world about our long-fought struggle to live in a free and united independent state.
