On 19 November, Australia joined the world in marking 1,000 days since russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. In major cities around the country, hundreds gathered to show support, resilience and unity.
Over 12,000km from Ukraine, Australia showed clearly that distance is no obstacle to demonstrating solidarity with Ukraine. Distance is also no protection from the security threat Australia faces from emboldened, authoritarian regimes.
A sad day to reach – 1,000 days of full-scale invasion, in 10 years of an illegal war of aggression, following more than three hundreds of years of colonial oppression. It is important that the world understands the history of russia’s colonial and imperial conquest, to contextualise the current war.
But marking 1,000 days is also an act of resilience and defiance. The russians gave us three days – yet Ukraine remains undefeated.
Thank you to all holovy hromad, community members and supporters for attending rallies in your city. Thank you for your advocacy, and thank you for standing with Ukraine.
