June 26 marks International Day in Support of Victims of Torture. This day is especially important to Ukraine and all of Ukraine’s supporters, as the russian invasion and occupation has inflicted horrifying terror and torture on innocent defenders and civilians.
The United Nations Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine (HRMMU) published new findings in March 2024, detailing the torture and ill treatment of up to 90% of interviewed Ukrainian POWs who were held in russian captivity, and a sharp rise in credible allegations of executions of captured Ukrainian POWs.
The report notes the findings reinforce previously documented patterns of widespread ‘torture or inhuman…treatment of Ukrainian POWs’.
The report also says that most civilian interviewees, arbitrarily detained by russian forces in occupied territories, ‘reported torture, ill treatment, or sexual violence against men and women’.

Today, we shine a spotlight on this sickening aspect of russia’s barbarous war on Ukraine, and its brutal impact on Ukrainians who seek only to live a free, independent life in a democratic country.
We will continue to support that the truth be told and that russia be held accountable for the crimes it has committed.
