On World Refugee Day (20 June) we honour and celebrate all people who have been forced to flee their home country to escape war or persecution, and acknowledge within our community the thousands of displaced Ukrainians who have lived this heart-breaking experience.
Russia’s brutal and illegal full-scale invasion forced millions of innocent people to flee their homes in Ukraine. We thank Australia for welcoming thousands of displaced Ukrainians to our shores. Here, they have found safety and freedom.
Two and a half years later, we continue to admire the resilience and courage of our newest community members.
Together, we have strengthened bonds of connection and community, and supported Ukraine in its just fight to resist Russia’s invasion.
Together, we will continue to seek pathways for displaced Ukrainians should they wish to stay in Australia and build their lives here.
From the first displaced Ukrainians who arrived in Australia over 70 years ago, to our most recent displaced Ukrainians, our goal will remain the same – a free Ukraine, which can chart its own destiny and future, free from Russian aggression and violence.
Stories from our Community…
Meet Leza Solowij, a bright and brave young girl who joined the Melbourne Ukrainian community (Association of Ukrainians in Victoria) after her and her family were displaced from their home in Ukraine.
Leza provides an insight of how kids understand and experience the reality of war. She retells the challenges and danger of escaping from Russian shelling to seek safety and freedom.
Arriving at her new school, Sacred Heart Primary School Kew in Melbourne, unsure of what the future may hold (and not quite sold on the uniforms!), Leza quickly made a huge impact on her peers, teachers, and all who met her. Leza has since become class captain! And has dreams of becoming a doctor.
We are incredibly grateful to all the schools, community organisations and members who have opened their arms and provide support to settle displaced children in Australia.
Leza’s heartwarming story is one of resilience and courage. All children deserve to feel safe and hopeful for the future.
