The University of Melbourne has published a fascinating article about the Ukrainian Museum, housed at the Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral in North Melbourne, and the outcomes of a half-day workshop provided by the university to the museum’s volunteers to assist in caring for the collection.
The museum holds a remarkable collection of objects, including rare books, folk and religious art, craft and textiles, including vyshyvanky (embroidered items). The Museum’s large collection of vyshyvanky pose special challenges when it comes to preservation and protection from pests, mould and other hazards.
The workshop featured conservation experts from Grimwade Conservation Services. Valuable information about the importance of temperature and humidity controls; properly cataloging the objects; and preventing chemical deterioration were covered.

The Ukrainian Museum of Australia’s current exhibition, Treasures, is open to the public every Sunday from 10am to 1pm, with free entry. The exhibition runs until March 2025.
