‘Treasures’ is a stunning exhibition of Ukrainian art and craft, showcasing thousands of years of tradition, culture and creative expression, which has recently opened at the Ukrainian Museum of Australia in North Melbourne.
The exhibition features intricate wooden carvings, religious icons and antique slavic texts, colourful pysanky and UNESCO heritage-listed Kosiv ceramics from the Carpathian Mountains, among other priceless artefacts.
Speaking with AMES News, Ukrainian Museum of Australia Director, Marusia Jarocky, said the exhibition was important as a cultural event and as a way of demonstrating Ukraine’s resilience in the face of Russia’s illegal war.
“We are fortunate in Australia that we can preserve some of our cultural heritage and that people can come see the art and get a sense of Ukraine’s artistic DNA.”
The artefacts come from the collection of the museum, founded by Father Zhenon Chorkawyj in 1976, and include many pieces donated by the local Ukrainian community.
