This week in the Australian Parliament, Alessia and Camille presented Members of Parliament and Senators with the gift of a Motanka doll, an ancient Ukrainian symbol of prosperity, goodness and hope.
The Montanka doll was handmade as part of trauma therapy by displaced Ukrainian children in our Australian-funded AFUO Ukraine Crisis Appeal shelters, serving as a powerful reminder this Christmas of the challenges Ukrainian children face, but also the hope our community has for a more peaceful future.
According to UNICEF, an estimated 7.1 million children, including more than 1.2 million children displaced within Ukraine, needed humanitarian aid in 2023. This was due to Russian attacks which destroyed housing, water and electricity services, and public infrastructure such as schools and hospitals.
The Ukrainian government has also confirmed that 19,000 children, and very likely hundreds of thousands more, have been forcibly deported to Russia since the start of the war.
