Today, we remember and honour the 107 Ukrainian human rights activists who were attacked and shot by security officers during the Ukrainian Revolution of Dignity in 2014.
The Revolution of Dignity arose from a large-scale wave of protests (Euromaidan) which erupted following the former President Yanukovych’s decision to reject the Parliament-approved decision to sign an agreement with the EU.
The Revolution of Dignity turned into a battle for democracy and human rights. It also marked the beginning of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine – Ukrainian Crimea was annexed and Russia sent personnel, artillery and tanks across the border to seize the Donbas in eastern Ukraine.
Today, just like 9 years ago, Ukrainians continue to fight for their country. In a few days, on 24 February 2023, 365 days after the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine will be commemorated. It will be a day to honour the victims of the war, salute the heroic resistance of the Ukrainian people, and thank those who have helped Ukraine.
We thank the Heavenly Hundred for their sacrifice. Their values were victorious in 2014 – and continue today to inspire us and give us the strength, courage and resilience to win the battle for freedom, democracy and justice.
