The decision by Putin to not attend the upcoming G20 summit in Indonesia and face the condemnation and isolation of other world leaders is no surprise according to the Australian Federation of Ukrainian Organisations (AFUO).
“Putin is humiliated. His ‘three day war’ to invade and subjugate Ukraine has turned into a nine month battle, with Ukraine making significant advances to liberate occupied territory in the north-east of Ukraine and around Kherson,” said Mr Stefan Romaniw OAM, AFUO Co-Chair.
“Besides being a military failure, Putin knows that his war on Ukraine has become synonymous with war crimes and atrocities.
“His war has also trashed the international rules based order and created intense global insecurity around energy, food and prices.
“Instead of facing the music, Putin has sent his international spreader of Russian propaganda, Sergey Lavrov, to the G20. Yet again, we will hear Russian lies and propaganda without conscience on the world stage,” he added.
The AFUO has called on G20 leaders to condemn the Russian invasion of Ukraine and to back Ukrainian President Zelenskyy’s demands for:
- the restoration of Ukrainian territorial integrity
- respect for the UN charter
- compensation for all the damage caused by the war
- punishment for every war criminal
- guarantees that this will not happen again
“Russia is acting like a terrorist state. It must not be allowed to get away with its unwarranted, illegal and immoral invasion of Ukraine.
“Pressure on Russia has to be maintained – including economic pressure. International sanctions must be tightened. Any multinational companies still engaging with Russia should be ashamed and should unconditionally withdraw from Russia.
“Doing business with Russia means supporting the Russian economy, and therefore the war effort. Such businesses have blood on their hands,” said Mr Romaniw.
