Australian-Ukrainians celebrate bitter-sweet Ukrainian Independence Day August 24 2022

Ukraine’s Independence Day celebrations have kicked off in Australia with Sydney’s Woollahra Municipal Council raising the blue and yellow Ukrainian flag above Council chambers at an event with local displaced Ukrainians and their children.

Around Australia, the Australian-Ukrainian community will also be marking this very significant, historic day with a range of events to honour Ukraine’s freedom, independence and future.

VICTORIA

  • Victorian Government will light up city landmarks in blue and yellow
  • Wed 24 August – a business breakfast hosted by the Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, attended by the Ukrainian Ambassador, Vasyl Myroshnychenko
  • Wed 24 August – a VIP dinner hosted by Fawkner Property and the Australian Federation of Ukrainian Organisations, attended by Vasyl Myroshnychenko, to raise funds for United24 – an initiative of the President of Ukraine to collect charitable donations in support of Ukraine

NSW

  • Wed 24 August – The Sydney Town Hall will fly the Ukrainian flag for the day
  • Wed 24 August – rally outside Customs House 5:30pm – blue and yellow flags, embroidered shirts, a tryzub made out of candles, singing and marching
  • Sat 27 August – Ukifest at Tumbalong Park, Darling Harbour, 11am – 8:00pm, supporting sovereignty and standing in solidarity with Ukraine, with Ukrainian food, folk dancing, live music, kids’ activities, cultural stalls, open air stage, and beer garden

QUEENSLAND

  • Queensland Government will light up Storey Bridge and other sites in blue and yellow
  • Sat 27 Aug – Ukrainian Independence Day Cultural Event 11am – 4pm Ukrainian Community Centre, 47 Galsworthy St, Holland Park West, with Ukrainian cultural displays, food, Ukrainian horilka (vodka)

ACT

  • Wed 24 Aug – all day protest outside the Russian Embassy, Griffith

WA

  • Sat 27 Aug – Independence Day Concert, 1pm – 5pm, Cracovia Club, 375 Marshall Rd, Bennett Springs

SA

  • Wed 24 August – the Governor of South Australia will hold a reception at Government House at 10:30 am to celebrate Ukrainian Independence Day. 30 newly arrived displaced Ukrainians, along with 10 locals that have been heavily involved in supporting these displaced Ukrainians, have been invited to attend.
  • Sun 28 Aug – Independence Day concert
