In November 2018, the Australian Federation of Ukrainian Organisations (AFUO) launched a unique photo exhibition in Melbourne to mark 85 years since the Holodomor – Stalin’s man-made famine in Ukraine in 1932-33. The exhibition honoured survivors of the Holodomor, who eventually came to settle in Australia.
Nine months on, the exhibition has opened in Kyiv through a collaboration between the AFUO and the National Museum: Holodomor Victims Memorial. On 22 August, Voices From Across the Ocean: Holodomor Photographic Exhibition was officially opened by Ukraine’s Minister for Culture, Yevhen Nyshchuk. Mr Nyshchuk spoke passionately about the need for us to remember the suffering that Ukrainians endured during the communist Soviet era and of the importance in informing, not only the world, but many Ukrainians who are still unaware of the depth of the tragedy of the Holodomor. Also in attendance were Melissa O’Rourke, Australian Ambassador to Ukraine, Olesia Stasiuk, Director of the National Museum: Holodomor Victims Memorial, members of the exhibition’s curatorial team Halya Kostiuk and Janina Green, and other distinguished guests.
This moving tribute was brought together by Melbourne-based Halya Kostiuk, Katya Danylak, award-winning principal photographer Janina Green and photographer Andrii Gavran. They travelled across Australia for almost two years interviewing and photographing Holodomor survivors with the with help of local diaspora. The project aimed to immortalise the stories of these incredibly resilient people – now in their 80s and 90s, some of which have sadly passed – and their families, ensuring the tragedy of the Holodomor is never forgotten.
The exhibition features 26 large, poignant, black and white portraits. Next to each face is the survivor’s story, generating a very powerful and emotional experience for viewers. Visitors are invited to write personal letters to the people featured in the exhibition. Also promoted at the launch event was Andries Pyrczs’ chapter dedicated to the Holodomor in Australian text book Twentieth Century 1: Between the Wars. This is the first time the Holodomor has been included in an Australian higher education text book.

Австралійська фотовиставка про Голодомор відкрилася у Києві
В листопаді 2018 в Мельбурні Українська Федерація Українських Організацій відкрили унікальну фотовиставку, щоб відзначити 85 річницю Голодомору, Сталінського штучного голоду в Україні 1932-33 років.
Виставка вшановує тих, хто пережив Голодомор і оселився в Австралії опісля. 9 місяців потому виставка відкрилася в Києві, внаслідок співпраці СУОА та Національного музею «Меморіал жертв Голодомору». 22 серпня «Голоси з-за океану: фотовиставка про Голодомор» була офіційно відкрита Міністром культури України Євгеном Нищуком. Пан Нищук пристрастно розповів про потребу пам’ятати про страждання пережиті Українцями під час совєцької ери та важливість та потребу інформувати світову спільноту та й самих українців, оскільки багато українців досі не усвідомлюють тяжкість трагедії Голодомору. На відкритті також були присутні Меліса О’Рурк, Посол Австралії в Україні, Олеся Стасюк, директор Національного музею «Меморіал жертв Голодомору», куратори фотовиставки Галя Костюк та Яніна Грін та інші поважні гості. Цей зворушуючий проект виник завдяки старанням Галі Костюк, Каті Даниляк, заслуженого фотографа Яніни Грін та фотографа Андрія Гаврана. З допомогою місцевої діаспори вони їздили Австралією майже два роки збираючи інтерв’ю та фотографуючи тих хто пережив Голодомор.
Проект був покликаний увіковічнити історії тих неймовірних витривалих людей, яким зараз 80-90 років, деякі з них не дожили до наших днів, та їхніх сімей. Щоб трагедія Голодомору не була забута. Фотовиставка презентує 26 великоформатні болісні чорно-білі портрети. Біля кожного портрету можна прочитати історію людини, що пережила Голодомор, створюючи дуже сильний емоційний досвід для відвідувачів. Також відвідувачі можуть написати листа людям зображеним на виставці.Також на відкритті презентували розділ авторства Андрія Пирча з австралійського підручника Twentieth Century 1: Between the Wars. Це вперше Голодомор був згаданий в Австралійському підручнику з історії.
Виставка «Голоси з-за океану: фотовиставка про Голодомор» буде проходити в Національному музеї «Меморіал жертв Голодомору» до 22 жовтня.
