DONATIONS TO THE AUSTRALIAN UKRAINE CRISIS APPEAL HIT $1 MILLION

March 4, 2022 by CYOA Administrator

Australians have opened up their hearts and wallets and donated over $1 million over the last seven days to the Ukraine Crisis Appeal, which is raising much needed aid for the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Ukraine as a result of Russian aggression.

‘The Ukraine Crisis Appeal is working with our existing partner Caritas to immediately distribute humanitarian supplies to Ukraine. Funds have already been transferred to assist with the purchase and provision of food, clean water, blankets, emergency housing, clothing, medical assistance and more,’ said Ms Diahanna Senko, Director, Humanitarian Aid Initiatives, Australian Federation of Ukrainian Organisations (AFUO).

‘The UNHCR says over 1 million people have fled Ukraine since Russia’s invasion a week ago, an exodus without precedent in this century for its speed. The UN agency has also predicted that up to 4 million people, or even more, could eventually leave Ukraine. There are warnings this could become the biggest refugee crisis this century,’ said Ms Senko.

‘Following a request from the Ukrainian Embassy in Australia, we have also opened a bank account for donations for non-lethal military aid for the Ukrainian military. This will include clothing, food, water, and medical assistance for the Ukrainian military,’ said Ms Senko.

‘We are deeply touched that these donations have been made against the backdrop of the devastating floods impacting Queensland and NSW.  We are grateful for the ongoing support Australia and Australians are providing for Ukraine during this difficult time. Equally, we stand in solidarity with all our fellow Australians and those displaced by these floods,’ said Ms Senko.

The Ukraine Crisis Appeal

A collaboration between the Australian Federation of Ukrainian Organisations (AFUO), Rotary Australia World Community Service (RAWCS) and Caritas Ukraine. The Ukraine Crisis Appeal is the largest Australian tax-deductible fundraising effort for Ukraine, with all funds raised going directly to humanitarian needs in Ukraine.
