Our Australian-Ukrainian community’s third year commemoration of russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine generated a strong response and engagement from the Australian Government, political leaders and the media around the country.
- The PM Anthony Albanese, Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong – Senator for SA, Coalition Leader Peter Dutton, Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs David Coleman – Member for Banks and Shadow Minister for Defence Andrew Hastie released powerful statements of support for Ukraine
- The Australian Government announced 149 additional sanctions against russian individuals and entities
- More than 60 state and federal political leaders and the Governor-General of Australia Sam Mostyn attended state hromada events around the country
- Senator Catryna Bilyk and Senator Linda Reynolds, Co-chairs of the Australia-Ukraine Parliamentary Friendship Group (AUPFG), and AUPFG member and Member for Adelaide, Mr Steve Georganas MP, moved motions in the Senate and House of Reps respectively
- The AFUO sent 262 letters to all federal members of parliament
- H.E. Vasyl Myroshnychenko, Ukrainian Ambassador, and Kateryna Argyrou, AFUO Co-Chair, held a well-attended media conference at Parliament House, Canberra
- Ambassadors and Honorary Consuls from European countries, the United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand and elsewhere attended events round the country
- Representatives from the Baltic, Polish, Vietnamese, Jewish and Hong Kong communities stood with us in solidarity
- National coverage included pieces from 7 News, 9 News, SBS News, ABC News, WIN Canberra, 2CC Radio Canberra, 2GB Sydney, and a front-page story in the Sydney Morning Herald (initiated by the AFUO) about our brave, young Ukrainian defender, Nazar “Kapa” (also published in The Age)
