Supporting Ukraine in a Changing Global Landscape

March 7, 2025 by CYOA Administrator

After weeks of volatility in global politics driven by the Trump administration’s shifting support for Ukraine, Ukrainians worldwide are asking: How can we best support Ukraine?

The Australian Federation of Ukrainian Organisations (AFUO) believes it’s crucial to focus on the fundamentals:

  • Ukraine’s primary and greatest enemy is putin and his war machine.
  • Ukrainians have a strong, unwavering belief in their sovereignty, freedom and democracy – and no one will ever be able to change this.
  • Ukrainians deeply appreciate the support provided to date by allies such as the United States, Europe and Australia.
  • In a rapidly changing environment, democracies must remain united against russian aggression — division only weakens us and strengthens Putin.
  • As Ukraine continues negotiating with all allies for sustained support, the global diaspora must urge those allies to provide meaningful and timely aid to help defend our shared values. A coordinated, united effort is essential to act in Ukraine’s national interest.

Coordinated Action in Australia

The AFUO, as a member of the Ukrainian World Congress (UWC), is working closely with the UWC to strengthen global support. The UWC is the peak body for the 25 million strong Ukrainian diaspora, and our co-chair, Kateryna Argyrou, serves as a UWC Director.

If you’re looking for ways to take action:

  • Support military aid: Write to your MP, backing Ambassador Myroshnychenko’s call for Australia to send more military support to Ukraine, such as Bushmasters and M113s. The Australian Government could also prioritise the assignment of Tiger helicopters to Ukraine: https://bit.ly/3JnG7iB
  • Join rallies & meetings in support of Ukraine:
    • 📍 Sydney: Rally/meeting with UWC President Paul Grod outside the Sydney Town Hall on Saturday, March 8, at 2:00/3:00pm AEDT
    • 📍 Melbourne: Community meeting with Paul Grod on Tuesday, March 18, 7:00pm AEDT at the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Essendon, to discuss further actions
    • 📍 Darwin: Stand With Ukraine rally, Friday 7 March 5:30pm ACST, Parliament House, Darwin
    • 📍 Canberra: Stand With Ukraine rally, Saturday 8 March 10:00am AEDT at the russian embassy, Canberra
  • Collaborate: Reach out to your local state Hromada for a united community response
  • Support Ukraine on social media – share positive messages and challenge russian disinformation

Together, we can make a difference.

More about the Ukrainian government’s asks can be found in the Ambassadors’s AFR Op-Ed here: https://bit.ly/3DaoUtB
