Over 100 invited guests including politicians, corporate leaders, business people, ethnic community leaders and Australian-Ukrainians attended an exclusive Australian screening of the new, unreleased documentary by Sean Penn and Aaron Kaufman about President Zelenskyy, ‘Superpower’ in Sydney on Wednesday 7 June.
Organised by the Australian Federation of Ukrainian Organisations and the Embassy of Ukraine in Australia, the event was supported by Humanity for Freedom, a new global nonprofit led by US political advocate Dane Waters and filmmaker Aaron Kaufman.
The screening was part of the global launch of Humanity for Freedom and their ‘72 hours for Freedom’, staged across six continents in over a dozen countries between 6-9 June 2023, in cities including Rome, Tbilisi, Sofia, Abuja, Tokyo and Buenos Aires.
A profile of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and his wartime leadership, ‘Superpower’ was made over the past year while Penn and Kaufman made six trips to the country. As a work in progress, the documentary was the Berlinale Special Gala film at the 2023 Berlin International Film Festival, where it received a moving standing ovation and strong reviews.
The documentary also unflinchingly portrays what the Ukrainian people are experiencing at the hands of Russia’s brutal assault, and how President’s Zelenskyy’s leadership and the Ukrainian people’s unbreakable spirit are making possible their courageous stand for freedom and democracy.
