The Australian Federation of Ukrainian Organisations (AFUO) urges Australia to support international moves to act immediately to protect Ukraine’s sky and save the lives of millions of innocent Ukrainian civilians and safeguard the security of the entire European continent.
Russia’s continued brutal air assault upon Ukraine and the indiscriminate shelling and bombing of Ukrainian cities must be stopped. Thousands have been killed; millions forced to flee their homes. Russian air forces are continuing to bomb cities such as Mariupol even as civilians are trying to flee the city. A savage attack on Vinnytsia has destroyed the airport. A whole family was hit as a shell fell in the middle of the evacuee route in Irpin. How can the world continue to allow this to happen?’ said Mr Stefan Romaniw OAM, Co-Chair AFUO.
‘Following the shelling of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear facility, brave Ukrainian defenders are now risking their lives, protecting the world from the greatest nuclear disaster in history. The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant is the largest nuclear station in Europe. There are now multiple risk factors which compromise the safety of the facility. Should there be an explosion, experts estimate it will be 10 times more powerful than the nuclear disaster in Chornobyl,’ said Mr Romaniw.
‘We call upon Australia to support NATO and its member allies to close off Ukraine’s sky to save the lives of the innocent civilian population and safeguard the security of Europe. At the very least, Ukraine must be given more anti-air defence systems and fighter jet aircraft so it can defend itself against air attack,’ said Mr Romaniw.
